A very attractive and finely detailed late 18th century, oil on canvas painting, previously used as a ceiling decoration. The painting illustrates the glory of Gaia, the goddess of Earth, with a stunning gold painted background, surrounded by a thick laurel garland. A circular support, decorated with ram heads and garlands, is flanked by griffins facing each other. Above is the oval medallion with Gaia, in classic dress, on her chariot accompanied by a child, winged snakes, and a dog. On each side are spectacular 'S' scrolled foliate branches and a mask of Bacchus at the top.
