19th Century French Louis XVI St. White Carrara Marble & Rosso Levanto Fountain, Signed Cordonnier
Item No. 4206
A sensational and charming 19th century French Louis XVI st. white Carrara marble and Rosso Levanto marble fountain, signed by the sculptor Alphonse Amedée Cordonnier. The cut angle exterior surround has a molded border frieze with richly carved central shells and acanthus leaves. The large central urn is decorated the same and is raised by an ‘S’ scrolled base. All below an exquisitely executed girl standing on a pedestal holding a water bowl for an open winged bird.
Alphonse Amédée CORDONNIER ( 1848 – 1930 )
Born February 2, 1848 in La Madeleine-lez-Lille,
Cordonnier lived in Rome and then Paris until his death on October 28, 1930.
After his studies at the “Écoles Académiques de Lille” and the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he visited Rome. Between 1873 and 1875 he had a showing of two of his first sculptures: Persée in 1874 and Réveille in 1875.He won Premiere prize for his work in 1877 and returned to Rome from 1878 to 1881 before establishing himself in Paris where he found his fame.
He is commissioned to create a grouping in Bronze named L’Élecritité, for the Galerie de Machine in Paris, and a grouping for the Sorbonne, The Grand Palais, The City Hall in Paris and the City Hall in Lille. Cordonnier also created a grouping in stone named Maternité, which is now in the Adolphe-Chérioux square at the 25th Arrondissement in Paris.

A sensational and high quality early 19th century Italian Rosso Lavando and white Carrara marble fountain. The whole is raised by an octagon Rosso Lavando base below the wonderfully decorated fut with large acanthus leaves and a fanciful carved spiral grapevine. Above are winged cherubs below the extensively carved bowl with lion heads amidst acanthus leaves and floral garlands. At the center of the bowl stands proudly a winged putti holding a dolphin.

A most impressive pair of French 19th century Emperor style white Carrara marble throne arm chairs, raised by pawed supports all below a carved frieze. The backs are decorated by a carved eagle with a laurel wreath. The exterior sides are adorned by large Napoleonic ‘N’ s surrounded by richly carved laurel wreaths.

An important and unusual French 19th century Louis xiv st., salmon veined grey faux marble, painted scagliola composite fountain, after an 18th century design and model. the fountain is raised by an exaggerated bombee shaped fish scale designed support with 's' scrolls. Above is the large 'd' shaped bassin with square corners and decorated by several mouldings. The architectural upper has an impressive mask issuing water from the mouth, flanked by doric style capitols. .All in perfect condition and ready to use.

A handsome and medium scale pair of Italian 19th century Verrucano Lombardo stone planters, each in three parts. The planters are raised by a stunning well proportioned moulded socle. Above is the thick baluster central stem with exquisite mouldings. At the top is the richly carved planter of a classical shape and attractive natural designs throughout.
