19th Century Empire St. Bronze And Ormolu Clock Signed ‘LEPAUTE’.

A monumental and most impressive French early 19th century Empire st. patinated bronze and ormolu clock signed ‘LEPAUTE’. The clock is raised on mahogany mottled border base below the ebony platform. Above are two large and detailed patinated bronze figures of roman noblemen in classic dress, one standing and the other seated. Between them is an superb ormolu soldier’s headdress and highly chased sword. The large exquisitely chased ormolu dial with acanthus leaves and garland border. All original patina and gilt. Jean-Joseph LEPAUTE, (1769-1846 ) born in Bieves, France was a major figure in the field of horology and a superb craftsman. He was appointed clockmaker to Napoléon. Lepaute constructed clocks for other important residences including the Palais de Fontainbleau the Château de St. Cloud and Château de Comilègne. In 1821 he was appointed official clockmaster to Paris. In the Eighteenth Century French decorative clockmaking had reached its peak and during this period the house of Lepaute created some distinguished pieces.
