A spectacular and monumental Italian white Carrara marble oval planter. The planter is raised on an impressive mottled base with scenes above of a Baccarale with Bacchus and his followers depicting dance and the joy of life. The extremely well executed carved decorations throughout include a donkey and panthers amidst allegorical figures. Inscribed on one side is “INROMA VRBANIS VIII MDCCLXI”, celebrating Pope Urbanos twelve year Jubilee in the year 1625. On the other side is a later inscription, "Tito Malperi Rest MDCCCLXI".
