A sensational 19th century Continental set of five black lacquered decorative wall panels. Each panel is framed in a straight giltwood border and is significantly painted in the five fundamental colors: black, white, red, green, and yellow said to represent Confucius' five virtues. These virtues ideally practiced daily to live healthy, harmonious lives; Ren, the virtue of benevolence, charity and humanity; Yi is honesty and loyalty, altruism and consideration for others; Zhi is the virtue of knowledge; Xin for faithfulness and Li for propriety and politeness. Each panel is decorated with charming hand painted birds amidst trees and foliate on a rocky base, with butterflies and the legendary Fenghuang - the Hoho bird.
