A pair of very attractive Italian 19h century Neo-Classical st. ormolu and marble columns, stamped G S. Featuring finely chased ormolu busts of the lovers Bacchus and Ariadne from Classic Roman literature. Each is raised on a square black Belgium marble with an ormolu trim and socle. The red marble fut is topped by an ormolu top cap and black Belgium marble platform. The wonderfully executed ormolu busts rest on each platform.
The story of Ariadne and Bacchus: Ariadne has been left on the island of Naxos, deserted by her lover Theseus. She is discovered on the shore by Bacchus, the god of wine, who falls in love with her at first sight.Bacchus promises the entire sky to Ariadne where she then would become the Northern Star constellation, Corona Borealis.
