A Pair Of French 19th Century First Empire Period Crouch Mahogany And Ormolu Buffets
Item # 7596
A striking pair of French early 19th century First Empire period crouch mahogany and ormolu buffets. Each buffet is raised by rounded feet below architectural columns with ormolu bottom caps and fine patterned ormolu capitals. Above the straight frieze are the two interlocking doors with outstanding pierced ormolu keyhole escutcheons that open to reveal the original top to bottom lock and one shelf. The wonderful warm crouch mahogany grain spreads over the frieze and over the two doors as one continuous pattern. Above is a drawer that displays a central ormolu mount of Cupid in a chariot pulled by Psyche in the form of butterflies. The drawer is flanked by charming and richly chased pierced ormolu mounts of Cupid dancing. Above is the original rectangular Arabescato marble top.
