A high quality and substantially scaled Continental 18th century Louis XVI period kingwood, tulipwood and ormolu Bureau Plat. This magnificent and statement making desk is raised by handsome square tapered legs with decorative parquetry and outstanding wrap around ormolu acorn finial sabots. At the front are five drawers with rich parquetry throughout, including the rare and impressive original keys and original hardware, with rich pierced ormolu keyhole escutcheons. The bottom left drawer opens to reveal a pull out storage compartment with a hidden safe below, with all outstanding hardware. The desk borders are decorated with fabulous Entrelacs et Les Rosaces patterns, and richly chased berried laurel ormolu bands that continue under the seating well to the opposite side, an uncommon and rare high quality finish. The opposite side is finished with the same striking look as the front, with decorative faux drawers. At each side are pull outs with warm green leather fitted gold tooled top that locks via a hidden mechanism in the top desk drawers. Above, framed in a fabulous thick parquetry border, is the green gold tooled leather top. All original gilt and patina throughout.
