A high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. terra cotta grouping of putti signed A. Carrier 1864. The charming statuary is raised by an oblong giltwood base following the contour, displaying a stepped design with a fine beaded band. The terra cotta statue is of two adorable and richly sculpted putti seated on the ground with an overflowing water urn between them. The wonderfully executed putti display fine detail and impressive lifelike facial expressions. Finished and decorative from all sides.
Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) A renowned French sculptor, a student of David d'Angers at the École des Beaux-Arts. Auguste Rodin worked as his assistant between 1864 and 1870. In 1862 Carrier-Belleuse was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was made an Officier of the Légion d'honneur. He was also made artistic director at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1876.
