  • Armoire -Wardrobe / cupboard

    Armoire à Glace -Mirrored wardrobe.

    Baguette -Bead or astragal.

    Barbière -Gentleman's mirrored shaving stand.

    Barège Pompadour -Watered silk and woolen clothes popular in the mid-1830's for draping furniture.

    Bas d'armoire -Low wardrobe.

    Bergère a Transformation -Armchair with filled-in sides, opening to from a day bed.

    Bibliotheque -Side cabinet glazed for books.

    Billet Doux -Small screen with writing flap.

    Bois Foncé -Dark stained wood.

    Bois Noirci -Stained pear wood (c. f. with papier mâché)

    Bonheur du Jour -A lady's small writing desk with drawers above a writing surface in the form of a flap.

    Borne -A circular settee with an appliqué on the centre.

    Boudeuse -Upholstered chair with two addorsed seats (see: dos à dos).

    Bronze Doré -Gilt bronze fused by process firing mercury. Mercurial gilding. Ormolu.

    Buffet -Glazed or paneled meuble d'appui with shelves above.

    Bureau -Flat top desk, often with trestle supports.

    Bureau à Cylindre -Cylinder desk.

    Bureau à Gradin -Flat desk with drawers above the pullout writing surface (Bonheur du jour) (q. v.)

    Bureau à la Bourgogne -See: bureau de dame.

    Bureau à la Capucin -See: bureau de dame.

    Bureau de Dame -Writing desk with superstructure of drawers and pull-out writing surface.

    Bureau en Dos D'Ane -Derived from a table à écrir à gradin (q. v.)

    Bureau en Pente -Originally called a bureau de dame (q. v.)

    Bureau en Pupitre -Tall writing desk to be used standing.

    Bureau Mazarin -Writing desk designed mid seventeenth century with two sets of four legs, each set joined by an X stretcher.

    Bureau Plat -Flat top writing desk on four legs with three frieze drawers.

    Canapé Médaillon -Louis XV style settee with oval central section.

    Cannelures -Fluting, usually low, wide.

    Chaise à Porteur -Sedan chair.

    Chaise à Roulettes -Armchair with medallion back.

    Chaise en Cariolet -Cabriole chair.

    Chaise Fumeuse -Smoking chair with yoke shaped padded top rail. Sit on in reversed position.

    Chaise Gondole -Inverted U back leading to the arms, usually with sabre legs.

    Chaise Lambrequin -Upholstered low chair with lambrequin frieze.

    Chauffeuses -Low chairs or stools.

    Chauffeuse Grecque -Button upholstered chair.

    Chiffonnier -Six drawer chest.

    Chûtes -Bronze mounts at top of leg.

    Coiffeuse -Dressing table

    Coin de Feu -Small fireside chair.

    Commode - A chest of drawers

    Commode à Deux Vantaux -Chest with two cupboard doors often below on long drawer.

    Commode Secretaire -Desk with an angled flap above two long drawers.

    Console -Side table

    Console Desserte -Ditto with marble top for food

    Console Jardiniè -Self supporting side table zinc lined for flowers.

    Corbeille à Ouvarage -Work table

    Crapaud -Small button upholstered tub armchair with fringes hiding the legs and woodwork

    Dos à Dos -Upholstered small double seat, literally for sitting back-to-back.

    Duchesse -A comfortable day bed.

    Duchesse Brisé -As above but splitting into three parts to form a berère, a stool and a small armchair. Occasionally found in two parts, forming two armchairs.

    Duchesse en Trois -As above.

    Ecran -Screen

    Escritoire -Davenport.

    Fauteuil -Open sided armchair.

    Fauteuil à Rampe -A generous 'U' shaped chair with a button-upholstered top rail. Also chaise à rampe.

    Fauteuil Anglais -An upholstered easy armchair, with only the moulded arm supports showing the woodwork.

    Fauteuil de Bureau -A desk chair with one of the legs at the centre front.

    Fauteuil de Cercle -Button upholstered easy chair.

    Fauteuil de Repos -Easy chair (wood framed)

    Fauteuil Voltaire -Button upholstered armchair with swan neck handles and tall back.

    Guéridon -A small occasional table.

    Guéridon à Abattant -Circular tip top table.

    Indiscret -Three seater settee.

    Jardinière -Stand with zinc lined container for flowers.

    Lit à Enroulement -Bed with over scrolled ends and cylindrical cushions.

    Lit à la Polonaise -Arched and canopied bed.

    Lit de Parade -Formal 'state' bed.

    Lit Bateau -A bed with two ends of equal height, each end over scrolled.

    Meridiènne -Chaise longue with a back support at one end only and half-back or day bed.

    Meuble d'Appui -Side cabinet (often blind fronted). Taller version called Meuble d'hauteur d'appui.

    Moiré Pompadour -Watered silk and woolen cloths popular in the mid-1830s for draping furniture. Barège Pompadour (q. v.)

    Ottomane Corbeille -oval button upholstered small canapé with woodwork showing.

    Panier à Ouvarage -Work basket.

    Petit Milieu de Salon -Button upholstered centre seat for four.

    Piquet -Folding table à jeu (q. v.) with interior wells for counters.

    Pliante -Folding chair or stool.

    Portière -Curtained and pelmeted doorway.

    Pouffe -Small button upholstered box stool.

    Psyche -Cheval mirror early nineteenth century.

    Raffrachissoir -A small table including brass or zinc wells for cooling bottles.

    Secrétaire à Abattant -Flat fronted desk with fall front writing surface.

    Secrétaire à Abattant à Doucine -Fall front writing surface above two cupbards.

    Secrétaire à Culbute - A secrétaire en pente whose whole interior folds down to make a small flat top writing desk.

    Secrétaire à Dessus Brise -Angled fall front desk above cupboards.

    Secrétaire en Armoire -Old name for secrétaire à abattant, normally intended to go against a wall.

    Secrétaire en Armoire -Old name for Secrétaire à abattant, normally intended to go against a wall.

    Secrétaire en Encoignure -Corner desk

    Secrétaire Scriban -Angled fall front desk on two long drawers with cupboards above.

    Secrétaire Violonne -Secrétaire à abattant wasted to from rough outline of a violin. For example see lacquer secrétaire by J. F. Leleu.

    Table à Ecrise -Flat top desk with pull-out writing (brushing) slide.

    Table à Gibier -Long, low hunting table.

    Table à Jeu -Usually large circular drum table.

    Table à la Tronchin -Reading table on trestle supports with an adjustable centre flap.

    Table Ambulante -Small light movable occasional table.

    Table à Volets -Sofa table.

    Table d'Aquarelliste -Small occasional table for the amateur painter.

    Table de Canapé -Rectangular table with small 'D' flap at either end.

    Table de Chevet -Bedside table.

    Table de Salon -Centre table.

    Table Pliante -Small mobile table with two flaps at one side only.

    Tables Gigognes -Nest of tables.

    Tabouret -Stool.

    Tabouret en X -X frame stool.

    Trabailleuse -Work table.

    Vénitienne -Button upholstered double ended chaise longue.

    Vieux Bois -A much favored term for Flemish 'Jacobethan² furniture.

    Vis à Vis -See confidente (q. v.).

    Voyeuse -Low chair with padded back rail for leaning on.
