A stunning and very unique French 19th century Louis XV st. Tortoiseshell and ormolu clock signed and retailed by Tiffany & Co. The clock is raised by a most elegant scalloped base with fine ormolu bands with lovely fitted foliate bands and richly chased swaging blooming flower garlands. Above a reeded band is the beautifully curved body encased with acanthus leaves leading upwards flanking the original fitted glass pane. The front door opens to reveal the stunning original pendulum with a most unique Aneroïd barometer with the inscriptions Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair, Very Dry. The white enameled clock face above displays Roman numeral hour markings and Arabic minute markings with delicate pierced foliate hands and a mottled bezel with an elegant double twisted rope design. At each side are richly chased rams heads amidst berried laurel bands and acanthus leaves leading up to a central lion head and impressive top armillary sphere finial.
A point of interest: In the late 19th century, the American luxury items retailer Tiffany & Co would send their buyers to Europe to purchase the highest quality items and bring them back to the US to be sold to their very discriminating clientele, as part of their own brand. — Read Less
