A stunning French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu statue of The Chariot of Minerva signed E. FREMIET and F. Barbedienne, Fondeur. The statue is raised by an oblong terrain designed base with a mottled border. Above is the beautiful Minerva clad in battle gear standing in her chariot. She has her shield strapped to her arm with the Owl of Minerva on the front (or Owl of Athena), a symbol of knowledge, wisdom perspicacity and erudition. She holds her spear in her right hand and the reins to her three handsome horses in the other. Her impressive chariot is decorated with Greek key designs and has a richly chased serpent at the back, wearing a berried laurel wreath. Minerva is the Roman Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare and the sponsor of arts, trade and strategy. Wonderful attention to detail with all original gilt throughout.
