A most decorative and high quality true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu, and black Belgian marble statues of Mercury and Fortuna, after a model by Louis Guillaume Fulconis. Each statue is raised by a circular stepped black Belgian marble base below a striking and richly chased wrap around ormolu bands. The bands display charming richly chased cherubs playing and sculpting statues. Above are the patinated bronze statues of Fortuna and Mercury with ormolu accents. Each is standing on a gust of wind blown by Zephyrus. Mercury is holding an ormolu caduceus while Fortuna is holding an ormolu staff and a foliate branch.
Mercury was the god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence, communication, divination, travelers, luck, trickery, and thieves; he also serves as the guide of souls to the underworld.
Fortuna was the goddess of fortune and the personification of luck in Roman religion. — Read Less
