A striking and very high quality French 19th century Transitional st. mahogany, ormolu and malachite side table, attributed to François Linke. The circular table is raised by elegant lightly curved tapered legs with finely detailed acanthus leaf sabots and tied fluted chutes that lead up to richly chased floral corner mounts. The four legs are connected by a beautiful stretcher with curved supports adorned with ormolu fillets and centered by a fitted malachite tier framed within a superb pierced ormolu gallery. A beautiful tied fluted band extends along the apron below intricately detailed swaging floral garlands tied with ribbons in a rich satin and burnished finish and framed within Coeur de Rai designed mottled borders. Above is the stunning original veneered malachite top also framed within a stunning most decorative pierced wrap around ormolu gallery with a lovely geometric design. — Read Less
(Transitional st.) -
While France was still under the control of Louis XIV and considered one of the three phases of The Sun King’s influence on French style, the Transitional style was much lighter in form than its predecessors. Pieces created during this period displayed greater eccentricity and showed freedom or lines. Wrought iron elements, arabesque carvings, and grotesque scenes were used to invoke emotion and sometimes confusion. This period and style continued into the reign of King Louis XV.
