A stunning and extremely high quality French 19th century white Carrara marble statue named Daphnis et Chloé, signed PHILIPPE POITEVIN 1875. The statue is raised by a circular mottled base where the signature is displayed. The base displays a wonderfully executed terrain design with lovely leaves and a rocky wall. Above Daphnis sits on the rock wearing a charming hat while teaching the beautiful Chloé to play the flute. The story of Daphnis et Chloé is about the love between the goat herder Daphnis and the shepherdess Chloé. Their love story was later realized into a Ballet by French composer Maurice Ravel that premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris by his Ballets Russes on 8 June 1912. Philippe POITEVIN (1831-1907) was a renowned French sculptor. Poitevin was a pupil of Joseph Marius Ramus and Armand Toussaint. His work was displayed at the Salon of 1855. He worked for the Palais Longchamp and created a bust of Maximin-Dominique Consolat. Poitevin’s work also adorns the façade of the Palais des Arts in Marseille with the bust of Sesostris to represent the art of ancient Egypt. — Read Less
