A sensational and extremely high quality French mid 19th century Louis XVI st. mahogany, ebony and ormolu five drawer chest signed SORMANI PARIS and PAUL SORMANI 10. r. Charlot, Paris. The chest is raised by impressive octagonal shaped tapered legs with richly chased wrap around fitted ormolu sabots in the same shape with fine foliate designs. At the scalloped shaped frieze is the striking and exquisitely detailed tied floral wreath flanked by charming cornucopias housing lovely floral arrangements. The uniquely designed 'sans traverse' (without crossbar) central two drawers each display fine rosettes and berried laurel pulls framed within an ebony and an attractive egg and dart ormolu fillet. The two drawers boast a most decorative butterfly veneered mahogany center also framed within an ebonized fruitwood and ormolu border with exceptional sunflower reserves. Each side displays quarter veneered mahogany centers framed in the same fashion. The top three drawers display spectacular and intricately detailed intertwined tied ormolu floral garlands with branches and berries centering the discreet keyhole escutcheons. Each corner displays fabulous rich mounts of opulent swaging floral garlands. Above is the original white Carrara marble top with mottled border which mimics the magnificent shape of the chest. The central top drawer opens to display the signature plaque while the stamps are displays under the marble top. All original fire gilding and hardware throughout. — Read Less
