What Is The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour was a cultural phenomenon and educational tradition that originated in the 17th century and reached its peak during the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was a formative experience primarily undertaken by young European aristocrats as part of their education and coming-of-age journey. The Grand Tour involved traveling through various countries and cities in Europe, especially France, Italy, and other parts of the Mediterranean region..

A French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Ormolu, Crystal And Rock Crystal Chandelier

The thirty light chandelier with a striking crystal central fut is surrounded by six central supporting scrolled arms which split at the bottom into three arms. Flanking the supporting arms are six single arms. The three levels of lights are joined by swaging garlands of faceted crystal beads in various sizes. Each arm is elegantly decorated by most impressive and thick crystals of various shapes and cuts. The arms lead up to cut crystal daggers all below a fanciful top crown with hanging crystals. Exceptional quality with wonderful proportions.

Why Take A Grand Tour

The primary objectives of the Grand Tour were to expose young travelers to the art, culture, history, languages, and social customs of different European nations. During their travels, they would acquire artifacts and souvenirs from their trips to take back with them as reminder and to decorate their homes. The destinations on the Grand Tour often included cities known for their historical significance, artistic treasures, and cultural heritage, such as Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples.
