A stunning and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and Baccarat Crystal chandelier. This wonderful eight arm eight light chandelier is centered by a solid Crystal ball pendant which hangs with smaller faceted Crystal balls from a mottled Ormolu finial. The eight curved arms displays central reserves of tear drop cut Crystal pendants before arriving at the foliate bobeches which have additional tear drop Crystal pendants. Each arm is joined at each bobeche by gently swaging Crystal garlands. The central cage is separated from the arms by a Crystal encased central support bar. The cage is is decorated with Ormolu sprays of many sizes which are decorated with rosette, tear drop, and prism cut Crystal pendants. Separating the cage from the top crown is an additional Crystal encased central support. The Ormolu spray top crown is decorated with rosette, tear drop, and prism cut Baccarat Crystals pendants.

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
