An impressive and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble statue. The exceptional statue, modeled after the horses of Marly, is raised by its original elegant think Rouge Griotte marble base with two most decorative wrap around ormolu bands below a fine mottled border. The spectacular horse is draped in a saddle blanket and displays a wonderful flowing mane and tail while rearing and being handled by a handsome richly chased groom. The groom is draped in flowing garment and is holding the stallion by its reins. Wonderful proportions and attention to detail throughout.
Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746) was an acclaimed sculptor commissioned by Louis XV for the horse pond at the Chateau de Marly. In 1794 the horses were moved to the Place de la Concorde in Paris at the eastern end of the Champs-Élysées and later in 1894, these famous horses earned a place at the Louvre museum where they can still be seen today. — Read Less
